Lives and works in New York, United States

Liz Nielsen is a New York based photographic artist whose works have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Paris, London, and Berlin.

The analog color darkroom is a magical place where a pitch-black environment allows only the vision of the minds eye.  Without the use of a camera, Liz Nielsen builds her own negatives. Transparent shapes are cut out with a scissors and layered on top of glass. Handmade cardboard puzzles are taken apart and put together in the darkness allowing multiple exposures to emerge on the light sensitive paper. Light bleeds and is contained. Alongside of the enlarger light, she uses flashlights, bike lights, laser lights, cell phone lights, rave lights, and toy lights. Nielsen enjoys working in this way because everything is variable.  It is impossible to create the same image twice making each photogram unique.
In her most recent work, there is a focus on transcendence. She made images that fold time and space. The photos reveal secret portals and passageways where energy warps, echoes, transitions, and travels. She is drawn to light itself and to the ancient classical forms like circles, triangles, rectangles and squares.
The careful alignment of shapes or objects to build minor architectures can also mimic the constellations of the cosmos. The photographs range from rings of glowing runes, to future pyramids and transient space totems, to traces of light left by disappearing rainbows. The emphasis is on the journey of the spirit as it encounters windows in time where the body becomes a medium, and the mind is teleported to wonderlands beyond.
